Creating sustainable power solutions for remote communities

As Australia transitions to renewable energy, First Nations communities are experiencing extreme energy insecurity and are at risk of being left behind. In response, Power to Country is reconnecting a network of First Nations people with sustainable energy solutions to support them to live on Country.

A collaboration between GARUWA, Original Power and Ngardara Collective, Power to Country’s first project enabled Mumuthumburru residents to return to Country. Previously displaced to the nearby township of Borroloola when their energy system failed, Garrwa woman, Aunty Shirley Simon teamed up with local families to lead a campaign souring independent funding for a 100% renewable energy system, along with the restoration of critical water and communication services. She shares her story in GARUWA’S short film, Power to Country, highlighting the energy challenges faced by communities across Australia.

“Solar power will bring light and life to my family’s homeland and help us return to look after our special Saltwater Country.”

— Shirley Simon, Mumuthumburru Homeland

Solar powering Shirley’s return home

Homelands budgets are insufficient to support sustainable energy upgrades, but despite this Shirley never stopped trying to get her family home.

In August 2024, community-funded solar power enabled Shirley and her family to re-establish their homelands at Mumuthumburru (West Island, Northern Territory). The success of the Mumuthumburru model demonstrates the viability of self-determined renewable energy solutions for remote communities, and the urgent need to improve homeland essential services to allow more communities, displaced by failing energy services, to return home.

After the success of Shirley’s campaign, Original Power are working with more local communities to improve energy security for homelands and keep people connected to Country. You can support remote homelands to access reliable and sustainable power by donating to Original Power.
